'Master of the Bump'
In 2008, Sell directed a music video for Xiu Xiu's single 'Master of the Bump' from their album 'Women as Lovers'. The video, which is shot in high contract black and white and features a story line revolving around three Boys mixed up in the dangers of online dating premiered on Pitchfork TV on July 4th weekend to a storm of controversy. Though the video does not involve any nudity or graphic imagery, the basis of the video itself was reason for much public outcry. After reaching nearly 11,000 views on Youtube overnight, the video was banned from the website due to 'Graphic content', and when uploaded once again by various users, was continually banned and their accounts threatened to be deleted. The video, which was Sell's personal statement against homophobia in America, was invited to screen at the 2009 Lisbon Gay and Lesbian Film Festival as well as the 2009 Hamburg Gay and Lesbian Film Festival alongside videos by The Knife, Pete Doherty, Aphex Twin, The Gossip, and Bjork. Sell's name was included within a lineup that consisted of many accomplished filmmakers such as Chris Cunningham and Julien Temple. To this day, the video has been banned on various online video streaming platforms. It is included as a special feature on the DVD release of 'Xiu Xiu - You Can't Hear Me'.
"In the self-directed video for Women As Lovers track “Master of the Bump (Kurt Stumbaugh, I Can Feel the Soil Falling Over My Head),” we see two guys ready to meet up in the park after some sort of Internet relationship. That’s when things enter Dennis Cooper territory." Stereogum
